How to Print on Metal: Printing Methods for Custom Tin Packaging

September 14, 2026/in News/by acslock

Printing on metal is different from printing on paper or a flat label. A tin sheet may be cut, formed, rolled and assembled after the artwork is printed. Seams, rolled edges, corners, hinges, windows and embossing can all affect the final result.

For this reason, the artwork, printing direction and tin structure should be reviewed together before production approval.

What is the best way to print on a metal tin?

There is no single best custom tin printing method for every project. The right direction depends on the artwork, printed area, colour requirements, surface finish, tin structure and sample plan.

A practical workflow is:

  1. Confirm the product, packing method and tin structure.
  2. Decide which surfaces need printing.
  3. Choose CMYK, PMS/spot colour or a combination.
  4. Check artwork near seams, rolled edges and formed areas.
  5. Select the finish and any embossing or debossing.
  6. Review the artwork template or dieline.
  7. Use the appropriate sample before final approval.

The key point is simple: the tin structure should be confirmed before the production artwork is locked.

Main printing decisions for metal tin packaging

The term “printing on metal” includes several different decisions. Keeping them separate makes a custom tin project easier to review and approve.

Decision

Typical options

Colour direction

CMYK, PMS/spot colour or both

Printing coverage

Full surface, lid only, body only, local logo or inside printing

Surface finish

Matte, glossy, metallic or another confirmed finish

Decoration

Printed artwork, embossing or debossing

Words such as “metallic,” “matte” or “embossed” describe a visual direction, but they are not complete production specifications. The final result still depends on the artwork, tin structure, coating, finish and sample.

1. Choose the printing coverage

Full-surface printing

Full-surface artwork can create a complete visual system across the lid, body or other visible faces of a custom tin.

This approach is commonly considered for:

  • food tins;
  • cookie and biscuit tins;
  • chocolate tins;
  • tea and coffee tins;
  • gift tins;
  • promotional metal packaging;
  • seasonal packaging.

The printable area is not always the same as the outside dimensions. Rolled edges, shoulders, seams, windows and other formed areas can reduce the usable design space.

That is why full-surface artwork should be prepared on the correct tin template rather than simply scaled to the external dimensions.

Local logo or text printing

A local logo, product name or short message may suit a simpler packaging direction.

This can work well for:

  • minimalist branding;
  • promotional tins;
  • premium products;
  • small logos on plain metal finishes.

Even a small logo needs a placement review if it sits close to a hinge, corner, seam, rolled edge or deeply formed area.

Inside printing

Inside printing may be used for a message, pattern, instruction or brand graphic.

If the packed product will directly contact the metal, inside printing should be reviewed separately from food-contact or product-contact requirements. The material, coating, inner packaging and target market also need to be considered.

Inside printing by itself does not prove that a tin is suitable for direct food contact.

2. Choose CMYK or PMS/spot colour

CMYK printing

CMYK is commonly considered for:

  • photographs;
  • illustrations;
  • gradients;
  • multi-colour graphics;
  • complex retail artwork.

The final appearance of CMYK printing on metal can be influenced by the metal surface, base coating, varnish, finish, lighting and forming.

For important colours, a screen image should not be the only approval reference. A printed sample or agreed physical colour reference gives a more reliable basis for review.

PMS or spot colour

PMS or another spot-colour reference can be useful when a brand needs a defined colour for:

  • a logo;
  • solid background;
  • corporate colour;
  • selected graphic element.

The same colour reference may look different on white-coated metal, exposed metallic areas, matte surfaces or glossy surfaces.

For important brand colours, confirm both the colour reference and the surface finish.

Can CMYK and Pantone colours be used together?

Yes. Some custom tin printing projects use CMYK for photographs or multi-colour artwork and PMS/spot colours for important brand elements such as a logo or solid background.

Whether this is necessary depends on the artwork and colour requirements. If the design contains a critical brand colour, point it out before sampling so the colour direction can be reviewed together with the selected surface finish.

3. Review artwork around formed areas

Important artwork should be checked near:

  • rolled edges and seams;
  • corners, shoulders and hinges;
  • sliding lid paths and window openings;
  • deep forming areas;
  • embossing and debossing zones.

This is especially important for:

  • logos;
  • barcodes;
  • QR codes;
  • small text;
  • ingredients;
  • regulatory information.

There is no universal safe margin for every tin shape.

A round tin, rectangular hinged tin and deeply formed container may all require different artwork positioning. Use the artwork template or dieline for the selected structure instead of relying on a general rule.

For custom printed tin boxes, this is one of the most important checks before final artwork approval.

4. Combine printing with embossing or debossing

Printing adds colour and graphics.

Embossing changes the physical surface of the metal by raising a selected area, while debossing presses it inward.

These effects may be used for:

  • logos;
  • brand names;
  • lettering;
  • borders;
  • decorative patterns;
  • selected graphic details.

The available position depends on the tin structure and forming area.

Before adding embossing or debossing, review:

  • artwork readability;
  • available space;
  • tooling requirements;
  • surface finish;
  • relationship with printed artwork;
  • sample result.

More decoration does not automatically create a better package.

A simpler printed design can sometimes communicate the brand more clearly than several decorative effects used together.

5. Select the surface finish with the artwork

Surface finish changes how the artwork looks under light.

Common directions for custom tin packaging include:

Matte finish

Matte finishes reduce strong reflection and can create a softer, more understated appearance.

They are often considered for:

  • tea tins;
  • premium food packaging;
  • cosmetics;
  • gift packaging;
  • minimalist designs.

Glossy finish

Glossy finishes reflect more light and may make colourful artwork appear brighter or more vivid.

They are often used for:

  • cookie tins;
  • confectionery tins;
  • promotional tins;
  • illustrated gift packaging.

Metallic effect

Metallic effects may be created through exposed metal areas, metallic inks or another suitable production method.

For example, a designer may leave selected metal areas visible instead of printing a flat grey or silver colour. The natural reflection of the metal then becomes part of the artwork.

This can work well for:

  • tea tins;
  • chocolate packaging;
  • cosmetic tins;
  • luxury gift packaging;
  • promotional metal tins.

Pearl, textured or soft-touch finishes may also be available depending on the structure and production process.

The important point is that the surface finish should be chosen together with the artwork and colour direction, not added as an afterthought.

6. Prepare the artwork and sample

For an initial quotation, final artwork is not always necessary.

A product description, reference image or early design direction may be enough to start discussing the packaging route. For size and insert planning, see our cookie tin size guide.

Before sampling or production approval, provide as much of the following as possible:

  • product and packed-unit dimensions;
  • quantity per tin and expected order quantity;
  • preferred tin shape, size and lid style;
  • logo, product name and required text;
  • artwork or reference images;
  • CMYK, PMS or existing brand colour references;
  • barcode and regulatory text position;
  • surface finish and decoration requirements;
  • inner pouch, tray, liner or divider information;
  • destination market and target timing.

Plain structural sample

A plain structural sample is useful for checking:

  • size;
  • product fit;
  • lid fit;
  • usable internal space;
  • opening method;
  • tray or insert position.

Printed or pre-production sample

For custom tin printing, a printed or pre-production sample is more suitable for reviewing:

  • colour;
  • surface finish;
  • artwork position;
  • embossing or debossing;
  • window position;
  • readability after forming;
  • lid and body alignment.

The exact artwork file format, bleed, colour profile and approval procedure should be confirmed for the selected tin structure and printing process.

How to compare two tin printing options

Question

What to review

Where is the artwork?

Lid, body, inside, outside or full surface?

Which colour direction?

CMYK, PMS/spot colour or both?

Does the structure work?

Check seams, edges, corners, windows and forming.

Is decoration necessary?

Compare printed artwork with embossing or debossing.

Which sample is needed?

Structural sample or printed sample?

Is the product still suitable?

Confirm fit, insert and opening method.

The most complicated option is not automatically the best one.

Choose the direction that supports:

  • readability;
  • product fit;
  • brand presentation;
  • realistic sampling and approval;
  • commercial requirements.

Common mistakes when printing on metal

Finishing artwork before choosing the tin

Production artwork should follow the selected structure and template.

Otherwise, logos, text and backgrounds may need to be repositioned later.

Approving colour from a computer screen

Screens do not reproduce every effect of metal, coating, reflection, varnish and lighting.

For important colours, use the agreed sample or colour reference for final review.

Treating a keyword as a specification

“CMYK,” “metallic,” “matte” and “embossed” describe a design or printing direction.

The actual print area, colour reference, surface finish, structure and sample still need to be defined.

Forgetting the inside and packed product

If the tin needs inside printing, an insert, a pouch or direct product contact, include this information at the beginning.

The visual requirement and the contact or performance requirement are separate parts of the packaging review.

Frequently asked questions

How are custom tin boxes printed?

For many custom tin projects, artwork is printed on flat metal sheets before the sheets are cut, formed and assembled into the final tin components.

Depending on the design, projects may use CMYK process printing, PMS/spot colours, full-surface printing, local logo printing and additional decoration such as embossing or debossing.

Can you print directly on tinplate?

Yes. For many custom tin packaging projects, the artwork is printed directly onto prepared tinplate sheets before the metal is formed into the finished package.

The exact printing and coating process depends on the artwork, tin structure, surface finish and project requirements.

Is CMYK or PMS better for tin packaging?

Neither is always better.

CMYK may suit photographs, illustrations and gradients. PMS or spot colour may suit a defined brand colour, logo or solid background.

The best choice depends on the artwork, metal surface, finish and colour approval method.

Can artwork cross a seam or rolled edge?

Do not assume that it can.

Artwork near a seam, rolled edge, shoulder or corner should be checked against the template for the selected tin structure.

Important logos, barcodes and small text are usually better reviewed carefully around these areas.

Can embossing be added to a printed tin?

It may be possible for a suitable structure and position.

The available embossing area depends on the tin shape, forming zone, artwork and tooling. The final relationship between printed artwork and embossing should be reviewed before approval.

Why does the printed tin colour look different from the artwork on screen?

Metal surface, white base coating, varnish, matte or glossy finish, lighting and surrounding artwork can all change how a colour appears.

For important colours, use the agreed physical colour reference or printed sample rather than relying only on a monitor.

Do I need final artwork before requesting a quotation?

No.

An initial quotation discussion can begin with:

  • the product;
  • dimensions;
  • quantity;
  • preferred tin structure;
  • printing direction;
  • reference images.

Final production artwork should be checked against the selected structure before sampling or mass production.

Does inside printing prove food-contact suitability?

No.

Food-contact suitability depends on the complete packaging system, including the material, coating, product, contact method, inner packaging, target market and relevant requirements.

Final thoughts

Good metal printing starts with the product and tin structure, not just the artwork file.

The most practical sequence is:

Product → Packing method → Tin structure → Artwork → Printing → Finish → Decoration → Sample → Mass production

When these decisions are made in the right order, the artwork is easier to prepare and the approval process is usually smoother.

For a custom tin printing quotation, send your product dimensions, packing method, expected quantity, target size or reference image, artwork direction, colour references, preferred finish, destination and timing.

If your artwork is not final yet, that is not a problem.

Send us the product size, expected quantity, reference images and preferred printing direction first. We can check suitable tin structures and existing mould options before you prepare the final production artwork.

  • food tins;
  • cookie and biscuit tins;
  • chocolate tins;
  • tea and coffee tins;
  • gift tins;
  • promotional metal packaging;

  • minimalist branding;
  • promotional tins;
  • premium products;

  • photographs;
  • illustrations;
  • gradients;
  • multi-colour graphics;

  • a logo;
  • solid background;
  • corporate colour;

  • rolled edges and seams;
  • corners, shoulders and hinges;
  • sliding lid paths and window openings;
  • deep forming areas;
  • embossing and debossing zones.

This is especially important for:

  • logos;
  • barcodes;
  • QR codes;
  • small text;
  • ingredients;

  • logos;
  • brand names;
  • lettering;
  • borders;
  • decorative patterns;
  • selected graphic details.

The available position depends on the tin structure and forming area.

Before adding embossing or debossing, review:

  • artwork readability;
  • available space;
  • tooling requirements;
  • surface finish;
  • relationship with printed artwork;

  • tea tins;
  • premium food packaging;
  • cosmetics;
  • gift packaging;
  • minimalist designs.

Glossy finish

Glossy finishes reflect more light and may make colourful artwork appear brighter or more vivid.

They are often used for:

  • cookie tins;
  • confectionery tins;
  • promotional tins;

  • tea tins;
  • chocolate packaging;
  • cosmetic tins;
  • luxury gift packaging;

  • product and packed-unit dimensions;
  • quantity per tin and expected order quantity;
  • preferred tin shape, size and lid style;
  • logo, product name and required text;
  • artwork or reference images;
  • CMYK, PMS or existing brand colour references;
  • barcode and regulatory text position;
  • surface finish and decoration requirements;
  • inner pouch, tray, liner or divider information;
  • destination market and target timing.

Plain structural sample

A plain structural sample is useful for checking:

  • size;
  • product fit;
  • lid fit;
  • usable internal space;
  • opening method;
  • tray or insert position.

Printed or pre-production sample

For custom tin printing, a printed or pre-production sample is more suitable for reviewing:

  • colour;
  • surface finish;
  • artwork position;
  • embossing or debossing;
  • window position;
  • readability after forming;

  • readability;
  • product fit;
  • brand presentation;
  • realistic sampling and approval;

  • the product;
  • dimensions;
  • quantity;
  • preferred tin structure;
  • printing direction;

You can also review our custom food tin packaging, custom tin box quotation guide or contact our team.

For buyers comparing formats, review our custom cookie tins, square tin boxes, and rectangular tin boxes. If you already have artwork and target dimensions, see the custom tin quotation guide before requesting an RFQ.
