How to Get an Accurate Custom Tin Box Quotation？

When two custom tin boxes look almost identical on a screen, their final costs can still be different. One may use an existing mold and a standard lid, while the other requires new tooling, registered embossing, an internal coating, or a packing method that increases carton volume.

This is why sending only a product photo and asking, “How much is this tin?” rarely produces a reliable quotation.

As a tin packaging manufacturer, we calculate a project around the structure you need, the way it will be printed and formed, the production quantity, and how the finished tins will be packed and delivered. If you are preparing a new project, the following seven details will help you receive a more useful quotation with fewer revisions.

1. Explain What You Will Pack

Start with the product, not the tin.

Tea leaves, cookies, chocolate, candles, cosmetics, USB drives, and promotional gifts place different demands on a metal container. A cookie may need an inner tray and enough headspace to prevent crushing. Loose tea may use an inner bag, making the tin a secondary barrier and presentation pack. A candle may be poured directly into the container, so the body construction and coating require separate review.

Tell your supplier:

• What the product is
• Whether it will touch the tin directly
• Whether you will use an inner bag, tray, paper insert, or EVA insert
• The product dimensions or fill weight
• Any storage or transport concerns

This information helps us distinguish between a tin that merely looks suitable and one that fits the actual packing process.

2. Provide Product Dimensions Before Choosing Tin Dimensions

Buyers often begin with a target tin size, but that size may not leave enough clearance for filling, removal, or an internal insert.

Compare tins by shape and material before requesting a completely new mould.

If your product has a fixed shape, provide its length, width, and height. For loose products such as tea, coffee, candy, or powder, provide the target fill weight and, when available, the approximate bulk density or the dimensions of the filled inner bag.

An existing mold usually reduces tooling work and shortens the development stage. A custom mold makes sense when your product requires a precise internal fit, a proprietary shape, or a structure that cannot be achieved with an available mold.

There is a limit to this approach: the closest existing tin may leave more empty space than you want or may not fit your retail shelf plan. In that case, lower tooling cost should not take priority over product protection or packing efficiency.

3. State A Realistic Order Quantity

Quantity affects more than the amount of tinplate required. It changes how setup costs are distributed across the order.

Metal printing, cutting, forming, embossing, inspection, and packing each involve preparation. A small order carries a larger share of those setup costs per tin. A larger order distributes them across more units, but it also creates higher inventory and storage exposure for the buyer.

Instead of writing “best price,” provide:

• Trial order quantity
• Expected repeat-order quantity
• Number of artwork designs
• Quantity required for each design

If you plan to use one structure with several printed designs, say so at the quotation stage. The base mold may be reusable, while printing plates, embossing tools, setup work, and order minimums may still apply to each design.

4. Send Artwork Or A Design Reference

Printing cost cannot be judged only by the number of colors visible in a small image.

We need to review whether the design uses CMYK process printing, specified spot colors, metallic tin effects, matte or glossy varnish, registered embossing, or fine text near a formed edge. Artwork crossing a lid curl, seam, shoulder, or deep draw area may distort during forming.

For an initial estimate, a JPG, PNG, draft PDF, or reference image is useful. Before production, editable vector artwork is normally needed so the printing layout, bleed, color references, and structural alignment can be checked.

Please tell us if you require:

• Full-surface printing or logo-only decoration
• PMS color matching
• Matte, glossy, metallic, or textured finish
• Embossing or debossing
• Printing inside the lid or body
• Barcode, legal copy, or country-specific labeling

Sampling remains important for designs with critical colors, small registration tolerances, or embossing aligned to printed graphics. A digital mockup can confirm layout, but it cannot fully reproduce reflected metal, varnish level, or forming distortion.

5. Clarify Food-Contact And Coating Requirements

Choose the inner coating to prevent rust according to product moisture, oil content and packing method.

The word “food-grade” is not enough to define a packaging specification.

You should tell the manufacturer what food will be packed, whether it contacts the metal directly, whether an inner bag is used, the intended market, and the expected storage conditions. These details guide the discussion about tinplate, internal lacquer, closure, and required documentation or testing.

Dry cookies packed in a sealed inner bag do not use the tin in the same way as loose tea or a product that touches the internal coating. Likewise, a decorative tin is not automatically a hermetic container. If moisture or aroma retention is critical, the complete barrier system may need an inner bag, liner, membrane, or another closure measure.

This is an important boundary: a standard slip-lid tin should not be described as fully airtight without testing the selected structure and packing system.

6. Specify Packing And Delivery Information

Tin packaging is relatively light, but empty tins occupy substantial volume. Freight can therefore be influenced more by carton dimensions and container utilization than by net product weight.

For a useful delivery estimate, provide:

• Destination country
• City, postal code, or seaport
• Required trade term, if known
• Delivery deadline
• Whether you need sample, air, rail, or sea shipment options
• Any carton, pallet, labeling, or warehouse requirements

Nested structures may reduce shipping volume, while rigid shapes and lids packed separately may change carton configuration. A unit price without packing and delivery context does not show the complete landed-cost picture.

7. Confirm Your Timeline

A custom tin project usually moves through requirement review, mold selection or tooling, artwork checking, sampling, approval, printing, forming, inspection, and packing.

If you have a retail launch, holiday campaign, or vessel booking date, share it at the beginning. The schedule should work backward from the required arrival date rather than from the day you hope production will finish.

Lead time cannot be confirmed responsibly before the structure, artwork, sample requirement, quantity, and production schedule are reviewed. Revisions to artwork or tooling after sampling can also move the completion date.

A Practical RFQ Checklist

Before requesting a quotation, prepare:

1. Product name and packing method
2. Product dimensions, fill weight, or target tin size
3. Trial and expected production quantities
4. Artwork or a visual reference
5. Printing, finish, and embossing requirements
6. Food-contact and internal coating requirements
7. Delivery country, deadline, and packing requirements
